My Kitchen Handicap

I don’t know what it is, but I am handicapped when it comes to kitchen situations. Honestly something happens about once ever few months. Maybe my brain is not tuned in real well when these things occur, but I am lucky I guess that nothing too serious has happened. Today for instance I forgot to turn off a burner on the stove. I checked something in the oven with two oven mitts, then set the mitts on the burner that was still on. I left the room for a couple minutes and luckily I got back into the kitchen before it got out of hand. But the mitts? Yeah they were BURNING..smoke is pouring off the mitts as I enter the room and I had to toss them into the sink and turn on the water. Nice! Once I took a long glass pyrex dish out of the oven and set it on the stove top. The stove top was still hot and I had not turned that off yet either. The glass dish completely shattered..right there–on the stove top..food ruined obviously, and glass pieces all over my kitchen floor. Another time I had a white enamel tea pot sitting on an unused burner.  I accidentally turned that burner on instead of the one I wanted to cook on–the burner was the one under the empty tea pot–and well… that nice teapot started burning, smoking, and the bottom of it was quite black ..and it was stuck to the burner for awhile. Sometimes I have been known to reach in to take something out of the oven, without a mitt on. OUCH. Hubby has witnessed me doing that –or about to do that and stopped me. The worst thing of all is that my brain is not wired to consistently understand the stove top controls. By now you are probably shaking your head and wondering what kind of Einstein I am..but seriously–I read the controls—”Left Front” and have to think it out before turning it on..because I often turn the wrong one on..my pot sits with water unboiled, while another burner is warming up. So I turn a burner on after reading aloud “RIGHT REAR” and thinking and checking to be sure I am turning on the correct burner. I realize Martha Stewart will not be inviting me on her show anytime soon. I actually like to cook, but I think that my brain must be too distracted by other thoughts sometimes..thus the mistakes I make. Sigh.
Oh. And today when I left the house–I apparently did not shut the door from the kitchen to the garage, tightly. Thus–heating the outdoors. Hubby noticed it, and pulled it shut. But when he told me about it later, he said it kindly and smiled..and I appreciate that :) .

This folks, is what happens when ADD goes untreated :) .

  1. Well, I don’t even have ADD as an excuse! Let’s just say my finer kitchen moments have included an exploding cake and making coffee but forgetting to add the coffee.

I think Martha probably has a hit out on me…

  2. I think these are all things we have done.
One time I got distracted and left 5 lbs of ground beef on top of the freezer..then we went out of town..you can’t imagine the smell when we got home.
I thought I would never air the house out..
